  • About The Role

  • The Trainee Engineering Access Planner position at GB Railfreight is intended to offer an introduction into the Engineering Access processes and the engineering access publications that forge the delivery of engineering works on the rail network.
     
    During the training over time we expect to develop a process that communicates disruption to GBRf stakeholders on all levels, to promote advance planning with GBRf planning teams and notification to customers. The role forms a key part within the long-term strategy of GB Railfreight’s Planning Team, which is at the heart of how our railfreight services are devised and operated.
     
    Upon completion of your training (usually 12 – 18 months), you will have gained a thorough understanding of how a leading UK railfreight company works, particularly in the aspects of engineering work planning activities as well as understanding the challenges commercially of disruption to our services. You will also be taught a wide range of transferable skills, such as team working, being an effective communicator, problem solving and creating thinking.

    Main Responsibilities
    • To support the Informed Traveller team, who are responsible for adapting train plans around major railway engineering works.
    • To assist in producing and maintaining disruption advice to stakeholders. ·
    • To assist with recording and tracking of Network Rail Late Notice possessions as well as communicating this to relevant stakeholders within GBRf. 
    • To attend meetings to communicate the views of GBRf whilst also developing strong relations with Network Rail and other operators.
    • Support the Engineering Access Manager in in any projects to bring improvements to the business
    Skills and Experience
    • No previous experience is essential; all necessary training will be provided within the role.
    • Interest in the UK rail freight business is desirable or experience of working within the rail industry.
    • Knowledge of national railway Geography.is desirable and knowledge of train planning systems including TRUST/TOPS/VoyagerPlan
    • A general understanding of railway rules and operating methods.
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team and communicate clearly within the business. ·
    • Ability to prioritise competing demands and meet deadlines.
    Personal Profile
    • Enthusiastic and eager to develop a career in the UK rail industry, with a strong interest in rail freight operations.
    • Willing to undertake a comprehensive 12-18 month training period to build skills and gain experience in timetabling, train planning, and operational processes.
    • Proficient in IT with the ability to quickly learn and use timetabling systems such as TRUST, TOPS, and VoyagerPlan.
    • Able to prioritise and manage competing demands, ensuring deadlines are met and quality is maintained in all tasks.
    • Strong communicator, both independently and within a team, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
    • Committed to learning about UK rail geography, safety-critical documentation, and the interpretation of the Weekly Operating Notice and engineering blocks.
    • Demonstrates a proactive approach to understanding the needs of GBRf’s customers and delivering effective solutions to support business operations.
    • Possesses a general understanding of railway rules, operating methods, and the freight sector, with a focus on further expanding expertise through training and development.
    Essential Qualifications
    • 3 GCSE's, grades A to C, or equivalent
